Chair of Governors Vacancy at Little Chalfont Primary School

Dear Chairs of Governors

This message has been sent by Sarah Geary at Little Chalfont Primary School, can you help?

Thus far the Head has contacted NGA and all Governors have tried to recruit from our own networks as well as local businesses. Whilst we have been successful in finding people who would like to become a governor, we are struggling to find someone with experience who could take the role of Chair.

In truth, we are a fairly inexperienced board, with the other Co-Chair being the ‘oldest’ member of the board at 3 years. We are also fairly heavily loaded with parents on the board and really need to look outside of the school community for balance.

Myself and the other Co-Chair are actually both Co-Vice Chairs and have stepped into this role as no Chair could be found. It has been quite a baptism of fire! We certainly find it challenging with us both working full time and having small children and we feel that there must be someone who would be in a much better position to lead the board! We would still be very supportive and happy to lead on the committees we currently do in order to alleviate added pressure on a new Chair.

Any support you are able to give would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Sarah Geary

NGA Leading Governance Development for Chairs, Clerks and Boards.

NGA want to ensure you access DfE funding for our Leading Governance programmes at this critical time. A support network, a chance to develop leadership skills and amend practices to rise to the challenges that Covid 19 presents schools and trusts is something we are passionate everyone involved in school governance has access to.

We hope chairs and clerks who have not yet accessed the DfE funding (available for to up to two governors and clerks on all boards) will take the opportunity of registering for it whilst it is still available, by joining our new Summer 2020 cohort. You can access from between £350-£2000 worth of development for your board if you apply online and join the ‘Summer 2020’ cohort by clicking here for Chairs or here for Clerks.

All those who apply are able to access our eLearning and on-line evaluation tools, with the option of joining face-to-face workshops when it is safe to do so, or accessing this component of the programme in our upcoming virtual sessions. Once you have applied for your place, you will receive access to all course materials and online learning and can begin your journey to improved practise when it has never been more needed.

Our Development for Chairs programme is having definite impact in our schools, but don’t just take our word for it! Having recently completed the Development for Chairs programme, Simon Watson, Chair of Governors at St John the Evangelist CE VA Primary School in Oxfordshire writes about his experience including the value of building a supportive, sustained network of local chairs and the impact of the programme on his board’s practice in this blog. https://www.nga.org.uk/News/Blog/May-2020/Gaining-skills,-growing-confidence-and-making-an-i.aspx “I, like others in the group, have had some very difficult challenges to deal with since becoming chair, and this group has been instrumental in providing not only moral support, but high-quality impartial advice and guidance where we have been able to pool our collective knowledge to support each other in a confidential manner”, he writes.

We hope to hear from you soon, but if its not something you’d like to do, please do pass the email on, and encourage other members of your boards to register instead.

Kind regards,

Emma

NGA Disadvantage – considerations for the boards response to a widened attainment gap

Sign up for our next webinar exploring the key strategic considerations for boards in addressing the barriers experienced by disadvantaged pupils as a result of COVID-19 and how to respond in a quick, inclusive and measured way.

NGA’s annual school governance survey 2020

Thank you for taking the time to add your voice to this survey of those governing across England. For the last 10 years, NGA has been running an annual survey of governors and trustees in England to gain an insight into who governs our schools and why and how they do it. The responses play a crucial role in shaping the representation of, and support available for, governing boards.

This survey should take around 15 minutes to complete depending on your answers and all responses will remain anonymous. If you are unsure of any answers, please do not feel that you have to look up or ask for information, we have provided a ‘don’t know’ option for these purposes and it is possible to skip some questions. You can also save your answers if you need to take a break and return to finish off your response at a later date.

The deadline for completing the survey is Tuesday 26 May 2020.

If you would like any further information on the survey, please contact research@nga.org.uk to speak with our research and information officer, Hannah Garrington.

School governors, trustees and local academy committee members – we want to learn about your experience of being on a governing board, your views on education and current events, and your governing board practice, including how you and your board are supporting schools during this uncertain time.

Depending on the answers you give, the survey will take around 15 minutes to complete. Once you have started the survey, you can save and return to your answers whenever you like before submitting them. The survey closes on Tuesday 26 May at 5.00pm.

Take part now

Whatever your role on the governing board, however long you’ve been involved in governance, we value the views and experience of all school governance volunteers in England. Please do share the survey with your network.

Your answers to our annual survey – now in its tenth year – will make a significant contribution to what is known and understood about school governance in England. We’ll use the results to campaign on the issues that matter to you, amplify the voice of school governance across the education sector, and improve the support we – and others – offer to governing boards.

Although this survey is for school governance volunteers, we appreciate the support of clerks and other governance professionals in sharing it with their boards, schools and network.
